Instagram is everywhere these days. People use it to share photos, post funny reels, keep up with trends, and stay connected with friends. Some scroll just for fun, while others use it to follow their favorite creators, shop from small businesses, or join cool giveaways that pop up all the time.
So the other day, I saw this giveaway post that had blown up. The rules were simple—like the post, share it to your story, and comment to enter. I liked it, shared it right away, and then typed out a comment. But when I hit send, nothing happened. Instead, it showed a message saying “Couldn’t post comment. Retry.”
I tried again, thinking maybe it just didn’t go through the first time, but nope, same message. Everything else on Instagram was working fine—I could scroll, watch reels, reply to stories—but for some reason, it just wouldn’t let me comment. It was honestly a bit annoying, especially since I didn’t want to miss out on the giveaway.
If something like this has ever happened to you, I totally get how frustrating it feels. There are a few different reasons why Instagram might stop you from commenting, and luckily, there are some easy ways to fix Instagram couldn’t post comment error, which we will be explaining in this article.
Why Does Instagram Say Couldn’t Post Comment?
If you’re seeing the “Couldn’t post comment” error on Instagram, it usually means something in your comment or activity is going against Instagram’s rules. This can happen if your app is outdated, your comment has too many mentions or hashtags, or you’re using words that break Instagram’s community guidelines.
It can also show up if you’ve been commenting too much in a short time, posting the same comment again and again, or if the person who posted the content has limited who can comment. In some rare cases, Instagram might even block your IP address if it thinks your activity looks suspicious.
How to Fix “Couldn’t Post Comment on Instagram” Easily
Check and Rewrite Your Comment
If Instagram shows the “Couldn’t post comment” error, your comment might break some of their rules. You can’t mention more than 5 people in one comment. If you try to tag more, split it into two comments.
Also, you also can’t use more than 30 hashtags in a comment on Instagram. When you use too many hashtags in your comment, it looks spammy, and Instagram will block it. So, you need to use the most important hashtags and remove the rest.
Another thing you need to keep in mind while commenting is to avoid posting the same comment repeatedly on different posts. Instagram may see this as spam. There’s also a daily comment limit of around 200, so don’t go overboard.
Some words or phrases are blocked by Instagram or the post owner. If your comment has anything flagged, it won’t post. So, the only solution to this is rewriting the comment in a simple, friendly way and posting again.
Remove the @ Mention and Try Again
Sometimes, the issue comes down to a simple @ mention in your comment. If you’re trying to reply to someone and keep seeing the “Couldn’t post comment” message, the mention might be the problem, especially if you’re tagging too many people or the person you’re tagging has restricted who can mention them.
One user shared that they were replying to someone and kept getting the same error. After deleting the @ mention, the comment was posted without any issues. So if you’re facing something similar, try removing the tag and posting again.
Update the Instagram App
Another thing you should do when Instagram shows the “Couldn’t post comment” error is check if your Instagram app has any updates. Using an older version of the app can sometimes cause bugs or limit certain features, including commenting.
To update Instagram, open the App Store (for iPhone) or Play Store (for Android), search for Instagram, and see if there’s an update for the app. If there is, click update and let it download and install the latest version. If there’s no update available, you can try reinstalling the app by first uninstalling it.
Try Using VPN
Sometimes Instagram may block your IP address, especially if it thinks your activity looks unusual or spammy. When this happens, you might not be able to post comments even if everything else looks fine.
One way to fix this is by switching to another device, like logging in on a different phone or computer. You can also try using a VPN. A good VPN changes your IP address, which can help you bypass the block and let you comment again as usual without any errors.
Just make sure to use a reliable VPN, not a free one that may be blacklisted by the app or cause other problems. Once your IP is masked, Instagram usually won’t block your commenting activity anymore.
Try Commenting on Instagram Web
If you’re not sure what’s causing the comment error, the easiest way to check is by using Instagram in your web browser. Open Chrome, Safari, or any browser, go to instagram.com, and log in to your account.
Try posting the same comment there. If it works fine, the problem might be with the Instagram app on your phone.
They Might Have Blocked You
If you’re trying to comment on someone’s post and it won’t go through, they might have blocked you. Instagram doesn’t let you comment on posts from people who have blocked you.
To check, try commenting on a few other posts. If your comments work fine there but not on one specific post, that person may have blocked you or deleted the post before you could comment. This isn’t a problem with your app—it’s just how Instagram works when someone blocks you.
Wait for a Few Hours
If you’ve tried everything and Instagram still won’t let you comment, your account might be temporarily blocked from commenting. This usually happens if you’ve been too active or broken some comment rules.
These blocks don’t last long, usually less than 24 hours. All you can do is take a break from commenting and try again later once the block is lifted.
Instagram Might Be Down or Having Issues
Sometimes, the problem isn’t with you—it’s with Instagram itself. If you notice that lots of posts have way fewer comments than usual, or most comments are just emojis, there might be a temporary issue, or Instagram could be going through maintenance.
You’re not the only one seeing this. Many users have recently noticed the same thing—videos with thousands of likes but barely any comments showing. This usually points to a server issue or bug on Instagram’s end.
In situations like this, the only thing you can do is wait. These problems are often fixed within a few hours. You can also check platforms like X, Facebook, or Reddit to see if others are reporting the same issue, as people often go there to share if something isn’t working on another app they use.
Report the Problem to Instagram
If none of the fixes are working and you’re facing the same issues even after 24 hours, it might be a deeper issue with the app. In that case, it’s a good idea to report the problem directly to Instagram so their team can look into it. They usually check these reports and may respond with help or fix it in a future update. While this won’t give you an instant fix, it helps Instagram understand and solve bugs faster in the upcoming update of the app.
- Open Instagram and go to your Profile tab.
- Tap the menu (three lines) and go to Settings.
- Tap on Help and select Report a Problem.
- If you’re already on the screen where the error happens, you can shake your phone and tap Report a Problem when the prompt appears.
- Mention that you can’t post comments and what you’ve tried so far. Add screenshots if needed.
- Tap Send to submit the report.
So yeah, these are some of the easiest ways to fix the “Couldn’t post comment” issue on Instagram. In my case, Solution 1 worked because I was quickly spamming the same comment on every giveaway post in my feed—definitely not a good idea!
But that might not be the case for everyone, so we’ve shared other possible fixes too. Try them out and see what works for you. Let us know in the comments which one helped!
